ᑕᐋᐧᐤ, Welcome Mikisew! A Musical Meeting

Our Tuesday evening was spent with some incredibly talented young people. Humberside's choir students took the stage to sing a variety of songs include Zoe and Zack who sang Wheat Kings but the Tragically Hip as a nod to the schools work with the Downie Wenjack Fund's new Legacy School program.

It ws a magical night made even more special when Tyler came up on stage and did a 6 minute drum solo. It was incredible! Cadence also played guitar and sang a beautiful song that brought tears to our eyes. Starlett Beardy also made an appearance singing a traditional song on Cree. It was so beautiful and we were all very honoured to be able to hear her sing it. The language is so important and she wants to ensure her students know this. It was an incredible night. Many Downsview S.S. graduates and current students made their way to the show as they wanted to say hello and welcome the Mikisew staff and students to Toronto too! It was an incredible night! Laura Menard Humberside's music teacher did an amazing job setting up everything with Karen Kress, Meanie Tricker, and their student helpers. Big thanks to Karen Maguire for arranging the HAC sports game, and dinner and Zaph for getting some locally sourced propane!

The staff and students were interviewed by a reporter from Toronto.com, and had their photos taken.
