Meeting so many new friends and seeing old ones! Day 3

Wednesday morning, we started out back at Mikisew where we were able to see a few morning classes we had missed before including the weight room, and the Cree language class that Keith teaches. Keith kindly did a translation for Ms. de Jersey and an art project that Downsview is currently working on. Sarah from HCI is also trying to get some books for the school from an organization she knows about, but they did not have any Swampy Cree books, so we wanted to ask if any other Cree language books would be useful. Plains Cree it was agreed would be close.
This is one of the dogs that hangs around outside of Mikisew. Rusty and crew made us a lovely pancake breakfast at the school.

A few of us drove Chloe to school at Otter Nelson and got to see her new classroom where she is learning sign language. It was pretty awesome.

At Mikisew there are a few student projects hanging on the walls. There were a few focused on the residential school. The graphic novel Sugar Falls is about elder Betty Ross' experience at the school and the awful treatment the children suffered through.
We then had a tour of the Community centre off Treaty land where the mayor and council of Cross Lake meet, and the ambulance and fire service run out of. It was really interesting seeing all of the vehicles they use for search and rescue in the bush. It's currently fire season, and people will begin to have bon fires again, sometimes the fire spreads to the dry grass and then they are called. They are also the first responders to suicide attempts and overly intoxicated individuals.
